Updated May 2026: Phase 2 is now live, with 70km+ of trails and dedicated shuttle services. Read our full Phase 2 shuttle guide →
Nestled in the stunning Yarra Ranges just 90 minutes from Melbourne, Warburton Mountain Bike Park has officially opened its doors to adventure-seeking riders.
Since opening in July 2025 with an initial 30km of trails, Warburton Mountain Bike Park has been welcoming mountain bikers to what is fast becoming one of Australia’s premier riding destinations. With Phase 2 now open and the network expanded to 70km+, the vision is well and truly taking shape.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway with your partner or organizing a group adventure with friends, this comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about riding at Warburton Mountain Bike Park – and why staying a few days in this picturesque mountain town will elevate your entire experience.
What Makes Warburton Mountain Bike Park Special
The project is expected to inject more than $31 million annually into the local economy when complete, but for riders, the real value lies in the expertly designed trail network. Built by World Trail, the same company behind some of the world’s most celebrated mountain bike destinations, these trails showcase the natural beauty of the Warburton Valley while providing an accessible yet challenging riding experience.
From 4th April 2026, the park will have 60km of trails around the Mt Little Joe area, the park will eventually boast over 100km of trails when fully completed. This first stage represents just the beginning of what’s destined to become a world-class mountain biking hub.

Current Trail Network (Stage 1A)
The existing 30km network consists of predominantly green-graded trails, making them perfect for intermediate riders. However for those looking for more challenge there is also from the Top both a Blue run and Black run down. All trails begin with an uphill climb, so riders should have some mountain biking experience before tackling these routes.
The trails wind through beautiful native forest on Mt Little Joe, offering stunning views of the surrounding Yarra Ranges. Expert trail building ensures sustainable, flowing singletrack that works with the natural terrain rather than against it. The trails also handle very well in Wet Weather making them a great year round destination.
Current Trail Difficulty and Rider Requirements
- Primary Grade: Green (intermediate-friendly)
- Fitness Level: All trails require uphill pedalling to access
- Experience: Some mountain biking experience recommended
- Safety: Helmets mandatory, additional protective gear encouraged
- For the More Advanced: Check out the Blue and Black runs to add a bit of spice to your ride
Looking Ahead: The Future of Warburton Mountain Bike Park (Stage 1B)
Stage 1B opened April 2026, bringing the network to 60km+ and introducing dedicated shuttle services. The next expansion is scheduled for September 2026, with three iconic trail elements that will further cement Warburton’s place on the global MTB map. The full 125km Southern Network remains on track for 2027.
This expansion will cement Warburton’s position as a premier mountain biking destination, making now the perfect time to experience the park before it becomes truly world-famous.

Local Tips for Experienced Riders
Serious mountain bikers will discover that Warburton offers much more than the standard trailhead experience. While most riders begin at Wesburn Park, experienced cyclists should consider starting rides directly from Warburton township given the three main descents all finish in Warburton – meaning you can ride from your accommodation door and finish at local cafes.
There’s also a hidden gem that consistently receives rave reviews from those in the know and can give you a more dynamic ride: 3km’s from the top of the network lies a trail called “Tools Down” that most riders never discover.
For the ultimate experience, fit riders can climb most of the way to the top and then tackle Tools Down which takes you to the junction of Up-town Flow and Milling around, then climb back up to enjoy one of the three main descents back into town. This strategy transforms a standard ride into an epic adventure and showcases exactly why serious riders choose to stay multiple days in Warburton rather than making the daily commute from Melbourne.
Another way to tackle the park from Warburton is from the Up-town Flow junction, traverse across Milling Bitta This Bitta That until you get to Zingle Fun. This is the Descent down to the Wesburn side and is riding really well with fun little jumps on the side that experienced riders or novice riders can enjoy. Once you get to the next junction without going all the way to the Wesburn Park you can climb back up on Rubber Stamp to re connect to the traverse and then make your way all the way to the top or even fit in a Tools Down Also in there. A few good tips for a more dynamic ride.
Weather Considerations and Best Times to Ride
The Yarra Ranges climate means year-round riding is possible, but seasonal considerations will enhance your experience:
Spring/Summer (September-February)
- Longer daylight hours
- Generally stable weather conditions
- Higher fire danger – pay attention to Total Fire Ban days
- More crowded weekends
Autumn/Winter (March-August)
- Cooler temperatures ideal for climbing
- Beautiful autumn colours in surrounding forest
- Less crowded trails
- More variable weather – check conditions carefully
Always check weather forecasts and trail conditions before heading out. The park’s elevation and forest setting mean conditions can change quickly.
